Heart Rate Monitors (See Below)
Target Heart Rate
Where your target heart
range should be depends on your age and how fit you are.
Your Target Heart Rate--the range at which aerobic exercise (such
as running) is considered both safe and effective is 60% to 90% of
this number. Another
simple way to avoid over doing it while exercising is to make sure
you can still carry on a conversation while you are working out.
To find your estimated
Maximum Heart Rate, subtract your age from 220. Then to find
the target range, multiply your maximum heart rate by .6 and .9.
Let's take a look at the following example using a 30 year old
woman who considers herself out of shape.
220 - 30 years = 190
estimated Maximum Heart Rate
190 x .6 = 114 BPM (beats per minute)
190 x .9 = 171 BPM
Thus, her target heart
range would be 114 - 171 BPM. Because she considers herself
out of shape, she should begin exercising at the lower end of the
target range. As her fitness improves, she should increase
her level of exercise to a higher percentage of maximum. As
with anyone, before she starts an exercise program, she should
consult a physician, especially if there is a history of health
problems.

To
check your heart rate while you are exercising, count your pulse for
10 seconds and multiply that by 6, or use one of the many heart rate
