Body Composition Analysis:

Body
fat percentage refers to the percentage of body fat mass
(weight of the fat)
in relation to body weight. The weight that is not
fat is referred to
as fat-free body mass. The human body is made up
of mostly water (55 - 65%). In addition to fat, the body is
also made of protein and carbohydrates in the form of
muscle and minerals stored in bones.

We measure
body composition by bioelectrical impedance (BI).
The fat analyzer sends an extremely weak electric
current, which cannot be felt, through the body.
The analyzer then reads the resistance in the body to
that electric current. Since fat tissues have
little to no electric conductivity, the analyzer can
detect the ratio of fat to other tissues. Body
composition varies greatly between individuals.
Athletes may have body fat percentages much less than
even those outlined in the chart above.
Children, the elderly, body builders
and professional athletes, those who are ill,
experiencing swelling, have osteoporosis, are pregnant,
or undergoing dialysis have varying body water contents.
Therefore, this method of analysis may not give an
accurate body fat measurement. However, BI is
still a good method for monitoring changes in body fat
in these individuals.
Those who
have a pacemaker or other internal device should not
undergo body composition analysis by bioelectrical
impedance.
